William Gummow AC is a former Justice of the High Court of Australia. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1966, was called to the NSW Bar in 1976, and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1986. While at the Bar, he practised in intellectual property, commercial law, tax, and equity, and appeared in several important constitutional matters, some as a junior to the then Commonwealth Solicitor-General, Maurice Byers. In 1986, he was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia, and in 1995, to the High Court. After retiring from the High Court in 2012, he was appointed to the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong in 2013, as a non-permanent judge from other common law jurisdictions. Mr Gummow AC has also had a notable academic career, lecturing at the Faculty of Law of the University of Sydney from the year of his graduation until his judicial appointment. He is currently a Professor at the University of Sydney Law School, giving guest lectures, and at the Australian National University College of Law, teaching in the equity, conflict of laws, refugee, and constitutional law programs.
