Elders, Rangatahi Court, Whangārei
Matua Mokena Peeni and Whaea Huri Peeni from Maungatapere near Whangārei have been pou of the Kōti Tamariki in Whangārei for a number of years.
Kaumatua and kuia in the Rangatahi courts play a key role in guiding the young people towards gaining the cultural knowledge that they are expected to demonstrate to the Court.
Together, in collaboration with court professionals and under the leadership of the judge, the Elders hold their rangatahi (young people) to account. Both Mokena and Huri are ex-schoolteachers.
